Import Export (EXIM) Registration in Nepal

To legally import or export goods in Nepal, businesses must register with the Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection and obtain an Import Export Code (IEC). This is separate from company registration and PAN.

Who Needs EXIM Registration?

Any business that imports goods into Nepal or exports goods out of Nepal for commercial purposes needs an Import Export Code. This includes:

  • Trading companies importing goods for resale
  • Manufacturers importing raw materials
  • Exporters of handicrafts, agriculture products, or manufactured goods
  • Service companies paying for imported software licenses or equipment

Note: Importing goods for personal use does not require EXIM registration but is subject to customs duties.

Step-by-Step Process

  1. 1

    Register the company at OCR

Ensure your company registration at OCR includes import/export as a stated business objective.

  2. 2

    Obtain PAN and VAT registration

PAN is mandatory. VAT registration is required if you import goods above NPR 50 lakh annually or choose to register voluntarily.

  3. 3

Apply for EXIM code at Department of Commerce

Submit the application with company registration certificate, PAN card, ward permit, and bank account details to get your Import Export Code.

  4. 4

    Customs registration

Register with Nepal Customs for duty payment and clearance. Your freight forwarder or clearing agent will typically handle this per shipment.

  5. 5

    Sector-specific permits (if needed)

Some goods require additional approvals: food items (Department of Food Technology), medicines (DoDA), chemicals (Ministry of Industry), etc.

Required Documents

  • Company registration certificate (OCR)
  • PAN certificate from IRD
  • VAT registration certificate (if applicable)
  • Ward office business permit
  • Bank account statement or letter from bank
  • Director/proprietor citizenship certificate
  • Passport-size photographs

Hire a Licensed Customs Agent

Customs clearance in Nepal can be complex, especially for regulated goods. Work with a licensed customs clearing agent (Chakki Agent) who is familiar with customs procedures, HS codes, and applicable duty rates. Chartered Corporate can connect you with reliable clearing agents.
